Audiovisual speech integration: modulatory factors and the link to sound symbolism

چکیده

In this talk, I will review some of the latest findings from the burgeoning literature on the audiovisualintegration of speech stimuli. I will focus on those factors that have been demonstrated to influence thisform of multisensory integration (such as temporal coincidence, speaker/gender matching, andattention; Vatakis & Spence, 2007, 2010). I will also look at a few of the other factors that appear notto matter as much as some researchers have argued that they should, such as spatial coincidence(except under a particular subset of circumstances; Spence 2013). I will also look at the emergingliterature that has documented the widespread existence of audiovisual crossmodal correspondences, and consider their putative link to the literature on embodied cognition (Spence & Deroy, 2013). Exploring the Role of Low Level Visual Processing in Letter–Speech Sound Integration: A Visual MMN Study

In contrast with for example audiovisual speech, the relation between visual and auditory properties of letters and speech sounds is artificial and learned only by explicit instruction. The arbitrariness of the audiovisual link together with the widespread usage of letter-speech sound pairs in alphabetic languages makes those audiovisual objects a unique subject for crossmodal research. Brain i...

Speech Cues Contribute to Audiovisual Spatial Integration

Speech is the most important form of human communication but ambient sounds and competing talkers often degrade its acoustics. Fortunately the brain can use visual information, especially its highly precise spatial information, to improve speech comprehension in noisy environments. Previous studies have demonstrated that audiovisual integration depends strongly on spatiotemporal factors. Howeve...

The sound symbolism bootstrapping hypothesis for language acquisition and language evolution.

Sound symbolism is a non-arbitrary relationship between speech sounds and meaning. We review evidence that, contrary to the traditional view in linguistics, sound symbolism is an important design feature of language, which affects online processing of language, and most importantly, language acquisition. We propose the sound symbolism bootstrapping hypothesis, claiming that (i) pre-verbal infan...

Hearing mouth shapes: Sound symbolism and the reverse McGurk effect

In their recent article, Sweeny, Guzman-Martinez, Ortega, Grabowecky, and Suzuki (2012) demonstrate that heard speech sounds modulate the perceived shape of briefly presented visual stimuli. Ovals, whose aspect ratio (relating width to height) varied on a trial-by-trial basis, were rated as looking wider when a /woo/ sound was presented, and as taller when a /wee/ sound was presented instead. O...

What is the link between synaesthesia and sound symbolism?

Sound symbolism is a property of certain words which have a direct link between their phonological form and their semantic meaning. In certain instances, sound symbolism can allow non-native speakers to understand the meanings of etymologically unfamiliar foreign words, although the mechanisms driving this are not well understood. We examined whether sound symbolism might be mediated by the sam...
